This means that you will have all of your Antenatal care provided by the Midwife, and you will only need to attend the hospital for routine scan appointments. You will not see an Obstetrician unless a problem arises.

Once you’ve decided how you’d like to have your baby, it’s a good idea to call your hospital or birth centre as soon as 8 weeks: Dating scan.

Ultrasound scans use sound waves to create a picture of the baby in the womb. Most women have one or more ultrasound scans during pregnancy. The two scans routinely offered during pregnancy are the nuchal scan and the anatomy scan. Sometimes other scans are performed earlier or later in pregnancy to check the growth of the baby, the position of the baby or the placenta, or for other reasons. It may be that part of your booking appointment can be completed this way, whilst tests and observations are performed at a different time. In this follow-up appointment, your midwife usually reviews and relays to you results from any blood tests, scans and screening tests you may have chosen to have, ensures you have a date for your anomaly scan if you want one, refers you to the health visitor who, if you want, will meet you a few weeks before your due date , discusses options for antenatal classes in your area and generally checks how you are doing.
